about Thirdspace Quartet

“Third things are essential to[…]objects or practices or habits or arts or institutions or games or human beings that provide a site of joint rapture or contentment. John Keats can be a third thing, or the Boston Symphony Orchestra, or Dutch interiors, or Monopoly.” Donald Hall

Four friends convened in the Fall of 2021 with the idea of building an ensemble that is just as committed to exploring the vast landscape of the string quartet repertoire as it is to contributing to its chosen community. Thirdspace Quartet (formerly known as Treasure Valley String Quartet) debuted in January 2022 in Boise, Idaho. Through world-class concert experiences, distinctive collaboration, and unique educational programs, Thirdspace Quartet cultivates a community-powered chamber music scene in Boise.

Thirdspace Quartet (3SQ) is proud to introduce a multifaceted and exploratory debut concert season, featuring three concurrent series. Ritual presents classical staples and overlooked gems of the string quartet repertoire. Popcycle is all about crossovers and genre-blending: from pop to folk to jazz and things in between. State of the Art explores innovative and experimental work by living composers, and places emphasis on the performance of work by local composers. 3SQ is excited to present their work in unique spaces throughout Boise, and has partnered with The Social on 8th, MING Studios, and First Presbyterian Church.

The 2024/25 concert season features an array of collaborative performance and educational projects. We are excited to perform with local jazz pianist Alex Sjobeck and vocalist Sam Tru, engage students of the Idaho Fine Arts Academy in a side-by-side performance, and support the Davis Educational Fund through admission-free concerts. In partnership with composer Eric Alexander and the Boise State University Department of Composition, 3SQ will launch an annual initiative to commission, workshop, and premiere a brand new work for string quartet by a local student composer. Thirdspace Quartet is also a regular contributor to Idaho Concerts in Care, and is the core ensemble for Candlelight Concerts in Boise and Twin Falls, Idaho.

As Treasure Valley String Quartet (TVSQ), the 2023/24 “prelude” season featured four MainStage performances at First Presbyterian Church: Boise, Par Terre Winery, and Library! At Bown. TVSQ presented collaborative performances with Ballet Idaho as part of their Anthology series and Daniel Ojeda’s By & Bye: An Unsustainable Art Show, which was supported by Alexa Rose Foundation’s “Light of Day” grant program.

Thirdspace Quartet is supported by Idaho Commission on the Arts, Boise City Department of Arts & History, and is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas.
